Psoriasis

What is the main cause of psoriasis?

The best way to manage psoriasis is to recognize your triggers. Common triggers include the weather (especially cold and dry conditions), alcohol, smoking, sunburn, and certain medications. General skin inflammation doesn't help either, which is why anti-inflammatory ingredients are so helpful. Learning to avoid or minimize these triggers goes hand in hand with treatment.

What causes scalp psoriasis?

When psoriasis appears on the scalp, it's often confused with dandruff because of the similar symptoms of itching, flaking, and dry skin. But if it's severe and left untreated, it can lead to temporary hair loss. First, don't scratch your psoriasis—it might feel good, but it usually only makes it worse! Second, psoriasis can appear on the scalp, face, knees, elbows, and almost anywhere else on the body, but the triggers always remain the same. See your doctor, keep a food and activity diary to identify your triggers, and use appropriate hair products.

What are the best products for psoriasis?

Dermatologists generally favor two types of cosmetics: keratolytics and emollients. Keratolytics are products that promote skin cell renewal (such as exfoliants), while emollients are hydrating agents rich in lipids (such as fatty acids). That said, aggressive exfoliants like scrubs and strong acid formulas are absolutely not recommended. We're talking more about products containing 2% salicylic acid, mild retinoids, and even vitamin C. These help soften the keratin in your skin, allowing it to better retain moisture.
